CHAPTER 05 / FREE PASSAGE

You Said You Would. You Did. Let That Count.

“A five-minute walk? What the fuck is that going to change?”

If your goal feels miles away, a small action can feel insulting. You want a different life. Five minutes barely sounds like a start.

But look at what you are asking those five minutes to do.

If your aim involves changing your weight or fitness, one short walk will not deliver the whole result. In this exercise, you are also practising something much more immediate: choosing a realistic action and doing what you said you would do.

“After lunch, I will walk for five minutes.”

Then you do it. Now you have one specific example you can point to: you made a commitment and followed through. You do not have to feel transformed for that example to count.

Think of it as a repetition for your follow-through muscle. The muscle is a metaphor. The useful part is the practice: make the commitment clear, keep it manageable and give yourself an opportunity to carry it out.

You may still hear, “That barely counts.”

Counts towards what? It is a modest step towards a bigger result. It is also a completed attempt at doing what you agreed to do.

Give it the right job before deciding it has failed.
